  • Exploring the History, Community, and Quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama

Presented by Jenny Marvel, Ackland Art Museum, UNC-CH

During this interactive session, participants will spend time looking closely at and analyzing a selection of images and text related to the history, people, and quilt making traditions of the African American community in Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Participants will consider how this rural community, mostly descendants of enslaved people, found ways to give themselves agency in overcoming social and economic barriers throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

  • Source-Based Social Studies: History Detectives in Training

Presented by Tarra Ellis, Wingate University

Capitalizing on the fascination with CSI and sensationalism, this session will equip you to train the next generation of history detectives. Using both old and recent events in history, participants will apply principles of sourcing, contextualizing, and corroborating to solve some mysteries and present evidence of accurate historical accounts.

  • More Money, More Problems: Teaching Personal Finance

Presented by Savannah Blystone, NCCSS President-Elect

Teaching personal finance can be daunting. The new Economics and Personal Finance course required to receive a high school diploma is a opportunity to teach students skills necessary to succeeded outside of school. This session will look at the new EPF standards as well as go over lesson ideas, best practices, and some activities that I have found to be successful when teaching personal finance.
